Formula 1 debris fence maker Geobrugg has been awarded the highest level of recognition from the FIA for its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Swiss company achieved a three-star rating in the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme, demonstrating best practice and a commitment to continuous improvement.

While F1 teams, tracks, and circuit designers have previously achieved the FIA three-star rating, Geobrugg is the first circuit safety solution provider to be recognised by motorsport’s governing body.

“Achieving the FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation is a proud moment for Geobrugg,” said Jochen Braunwarth, Geobrugg director of motorsport solutions.

“Sustainability is no longer an option; it is a necessity. As the first safety solution provider to reach this level, we are proving that high-performance track safety and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

“This recognition validates our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint while maintaining the world-class protection our partners expect.”

Geobrugg’s debris fences are used at both permanent and non-permanent F1 tracks, including the Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix, and at the upcoming Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix and the MSC Cruises Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

Their systems were the first to be homologated by the FIA for use at every F1 circuit on the calendar, while both IndyCar and NASCAR have also used Geobrugg’s debris fences for their street races in Detroit and Chicago.

Tested to withstand the impact of a full-size car at 120kph and a 780kpg sphere fired from a sledge at 60kph, these debris fences serve as a critical component of a circuit’s safety infrastructure by protecting spectators.

The FIA’s Environmental Accreditation programme helps motorsport stakeholders measure, improve, and be recognised for their impact in reducing carbon emissions.

As the first safety solution provider to reach this level, we are proving that high-performance track safety and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

To achieve accreditation, they must undergo a comprehensive assessment of their operations within a motorsport-specific framework in line with the existing ISO 14001 and ISO 2121 standards. At least 17 criteria are evaluated, including energy consumption, supply chain management, and waste reduction.

Geobrugg demonstrated good resource efficiency by using high-tensile steel in its debris fences, which provide the strength needed to prevent impacts beyond a three-metre impact zone while remaining lightweight, reducing the carbon intensity of transport and installation.

The advanced debris fence system reduced weight and transport emissions by allowing up to 600m of debris fence to be shipped in a single 40-foot container, rather than 400m. Their products also use recyclable steel components, ensuring a multi-decade lifespan.

It shows how sustainability is being considered at all levels of F1, beyond what happens on the track.
