The halfway point of our 12-day festive countdown feature goes back to the summer, where McLaren Racing took over London’s Trafalgar Square ahead of the Qatar Airways British Grand Prix.
McLaren used the build-up to race weekend at Silverstone to stage one of its most ambitious fan activations to date, transforming Trafalgar Square into a live Formula 1 showcase with its McLaren Racing Live: London event.
Held across July 2-3, the free-to-attend activation placed F1 at the heart of central London, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri appearing ahead of the British Grad Prix as McLaren leaned into home-market momentum and growing fan interest around its F1 programme.
The London takeover was positioned as a way to bring the sport closer to fans who may not attend a race weekend, using a high-footfall public setting rather than a ticketed motorsport venue.
For McLaren, the timing was deliberate, capitalising on British Grand Prix week to amplify reach, visibility and engagement around its F1 operation.
Fans were given close access to McLaren F1 machinery, alongside a packed schedule of interactive experiences designed to replicate elements of the race weekend environment.
Racing simulators, pit-stop challenges and reaction tests were used to create hands-on engagement rather than passive viewing, while stage sessions and appearances from team personnel helped drive crowd flow and dwell time across the square.
Commercially, the event also served as a live platform for McLaren’s partner portfolio. Brands including DP World, Hilton, Google, Dropbox, and Jack Daniel’s were integrated into the experience through co-branded challenges, displays and hospitality-linked activity.

DP World, for example, used the event to showcase its logistics partnership with McLaren, delivering a show car into the centre of London and running a pit-stop challenge that tied operational precision to fan participation.
Meanwhile, Hilton extended its involvement beyond the square, linking the activation to a McLaren-themed hotel experience nearby.
The presence of Norris and Piastri was central to the event’s appeal. Both drivers drew large crowds across the two days, with the activation offering a rare opportunity for fans to see current F1 drivers and cars outside the confines of a circuit or motorsport festival.
McLaren framed the appearances as part of a broader push to make its F1 team more accessible, particularly to younger and more casual audiences.
While F1 was the clear focal point, McLaren Racing Live reflected the team’s wider motorsport footprint with cars and content from Formula E, IndyCar, the World Endurance Championship, and McLaren heritage also incorporated into the experience.
As F1 teams continue to look beyond the circuit for fan engagement opportunities, McLaren Racing Live: London stands out as a statement of intent.
By placing its F1 drivers, cars and partners in one of the UK’s most recognisable public spaces, McLaren demonstrated how teams can use large-scale urban activations to extend reach, strengthen brand connection and build momentum around key moments in the racing calendar.
